News: JELD-WEN staff go back to nature

By

Staff from JELD-WEN have put their gardening skills into action at a nature reserve next to the company's door manufacturing plant on the Rotherham side of the border with Sheffield at Woodhouse.

They took part in an afternoon of thistle and ragwort weeding, in association with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebrations where every JELD-WEN site will see staff giving at least 50 hours of their time to a local charitable organisation.

Mike Ward, Managing Director of JELD-WEN, said: "We were really pleased to be able to support an environmental project so close to our factory as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.

"We have been involved with the Woodhouse Washlands before as many of our staff live in the surrounding area and it is great to be able to give something back."

The Woodhouse Washlands Nature Reserve which is just off Retford Road in Woodhouse, Sheffield, is home to dozens of rare species of birds, great crested newts, water vole and wild flowers. The Woodhouse Washlands also provides a flood plain that is served by the River Rother to its previous wet state and encourages even more wildlife to the area.

Nick Simms from the Wildlife Trust, said: "We were delighted with the offer of help from JELD-WEN to clear this area of weeds that could be harmful to animals and damaging to the ecosystem.

"This is part of our ongoing work at Woodhouse Washlands that will benefit both wildlife and visitors to the area. This essential work relies on volunteers and we are very grateful for JELD-WEN's help and support."
